I am confused about the IELTS requirements for an Australian student visa as a Malaysian applicant. Different universities and visa websites mention different scores, which makes it difficult to understand the minimum requirement. I want to know whether I must take IELTS or if there are exemptions available. Choosing the wrong test could delay my application.
For Malaysian students applying for an Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500), the minimum English requirement for the visa itself is usually an IELTS overall band score of 6.0. This rule has applied to student visa applications lodged since March 2024.
However, universities often require a higher score than the visa minimum:
- Diploma or foundation programs: IELTS 5.5–6.0
- Bachelor’s degree: usually IELTS 6.0 overall
- Master’s degree: often IELTS 6.5 overall
- Some competitive courses such as nursing, law, medicine, or education may require 7.0 or higher
So even if the visa only needs 6.0, your university may refuse admission if your score is lower than its own requirement.
As a Malaysian applicant, you do not always need to take IELTS. You may be exempt if:
- You completed at least 5 years of study in English-speaking countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, or Ireland
- You recently completed a qualification in Australia
- You are applying for a standalone English language course (ELICOS)
- Your university accepts your Malaysian school qualification or previous studies taught fully in English as proof of English ability
Many Australian universities accept Malaysian qualifications such as:
- SPM 1119 English
- IGCSE English
- MUET
- A-Levels or IB taught in English
- A degree from a Malaysian university where the medium of instruction was English
In these cases, the university may waive IELTS, and if the university issues your Confirmation of Enrolment without IELTS, you can often proceed with the visa application using that evidence instead. But some visa officers may still ask for an English test, especially if your previous studies were not clearly in English.
Rozario Enterprises recommends that you first check the English requirement of your chosen Australian university before booking IELTS. If the university accepts your Malaysian qualification as an exemption, you may save both time and money. If not, aim for at least IELTS 6.0 overall, and preferably 6.5 if you are applying for a bachelor’s or master’s program.
