I am a civil engineer working in Abu Dhabi and considering the GSM visa. I have heard about two streams: skilled independent and state-sponsored. I am unsure if I can receive a direct invitation under the skilled independent stream without needing state sponsorship and whether my UAE work experience will affect this.

Yes, UAE engineers can apply for the skilled independent GSM visa (subclass 189) and receive a direct invitation if they meet the points threshold and occupation eligibility. State sponsorship is only needed for subclass 190 or 491 visas.
