Getting Started: The Role of EOI and Points Score

Before you can apply for the Subclass 189 visa, you must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. To be eligible, you must score at least 65 points, based on the following criteria:

  • Age
  • Educational qualifications (Diploma, Degree, or PhD)
  • English language proficiency
  • Skilled work experience
  • Marital status and partner’s qualifications
  • NAATI accreditation
  • Completion of a Professional Year Program

Visa Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189), applicants must:

  • Be under 45 years of age
  • Have an occupation listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
  • Demonstrate competent English language skills
  • Obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority
  • Meet the required EOI points score
  • Pass Australia’s health and character checks

Health and Character Criteria

All applicants and any accompanying family members must:

  • Undergo a medical examination within 12 months of applying
  • Provide police clearance certificates from all countries where they’ve resided for 12 months or more in the last 10 years (from age 16 onward)

Proving English Language Competency

Applicants must meet the minimum scores in any of the following accepted English language tests:

  • PTE Academic: Minimum of 50 in each of the four components
  • IELTS: At least 6 in each band
  • Equivalent scores in TOEFL IBT, OET, or Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)

Financial Obligations

To be granted the visa, applicants must have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government.
